In conversation with John Sergeant

I WAS very privileged last week to be sat next to John Sergeant at the Essex Chambers of Commerce annual Christmas lunch. When you talk to someone who has interviewed every Prime Minister since Harold Wilson and covered at first-hand most of the major events of the past 50 years from the Vietnam War onwards (not to mention starring on Strictly!), I became very conscious of the relatively mundane, uneventful life I and, indeed, most of us, lead.

John was even actually there, at the tender age of 19, when Martin Luther King made his I Have A Dream speech in Washington in 1963, one of the most famous speeches in history – how’s that for evidence that John had a journalistic nose for a story at a very early age!

What became increasingly clear from our conversation was the parallels to be drawn between his career ascent and the life of your more average-Joe business owner such as you and I. John’s career path was a series of making the most of a good opportunity when it presented itself, making and maintaining good contacts and having the guts to make a bold decision when required. Perhaps his life is not so different to our more mundane ones after all.
